4 car train operates today PDF Print E-mail

Petaling Jaya, 30 December 2009:- Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) is pleased to inform that RapidKL’s four-car trains for the Kelana Jaya Line will be operational beginning today. Three sets of the four-car trains will start carrying passengers from 10.30am today.

Prasarana Group Managing Director, Dato’ Idrose Mohamed, said the four-car train-sets would enhance the current two-car train sets and provide additional capacity to carry more passengers.

“Our trains will be running in a mixed fleet of two-car and four-car train sets. With these initiatives, we expect to increase the capacity, especially during the morning peak period,” he said at a media briefing here, today.

The new four car train sets are the newest version of Bombardier Transportation’s Advanced Rapid Transit Mark II driverless trains, which was designed in Canada and assembled in Mexico and partly in Malaysia.

The four-car trains had undergone testing from October. For this initial stage, three sets of the four-car train sets, from a total of 35, will be operational. The remaining sets will be coming in stages from the contractor Bombardier-Hartasuma until 2012.

“The timing is just right as with the beginning of the New Year, our new trains, in addition to the existing two-car trains, would mean increased capacity at any one time,” he added.

Currently the Kelana Jaya Line operates 35 units of two-car LRT trains. The four-car train sets are able to carry some 800 passengers at any one time, double the previous amount. Additional features include special area for wheelchair-bound passengers, complete with seatbelts. There are also alarm lights at the doors for the benefit of the hearing-impaired and flipped windows for emergencies.

Members of the Media were given the opportunity to board the first set of the four-car train at a Media briefing held at RapidKL’s Subang Depot.
